Song of the Day: James Brown - Try Me [live]

James Brown's Live at the Apollo never fails to bring a smile to my face. The screaming audience is fantastic, and the background vocals and horns are perfect throughout. This is one of the best live albums you'll hear, and here's my favorite song.

Song of the Day: The Meters - It Ain't No Use

I became obsessed with The Meters for a short time, but I hadn't listened to them in years until I pulled out my copy of Rejuvenation - and now I remember why I was obsessed. Outside of James Brown and Funkadelic, I don't think I've heard funk music as fascinating as this, particular in today's song, an 11-minute jam that never gets tiresome.

Song of the Day: James Brown - The Payback

I can't remember my motivation for buying it - I didn't care much for the movie - but the Dead Presidents Soundtrack has quite a few classics on it.  I knew a lot of the James Brown songs that everyone knew, but it wasn't until this CD that I heard "The Payback," now one of my all-time favorite JB songs.  His ability to riff over the same beat is second to none, and this song exemplifies that talent at its best.  I love how the intro of female voices leads into the main bassline riff, and this song contains one of my all-time favorite James Brown lyrics:

I don't know karate
But I know ka-razy

The man was a genius.
