Song of the Day: Dead Confederate - Heavy Petting

I saw these guys on Conan a while ago (pre-TBS) and really enjoyed this song. The singer shreds his vocal cords a la Kurt Cobain, and the music is somewhere between Vitalogy-era Pearl Jam and '90s Neil Young. These guys aren't even close to that level, but on this song they pull off a pretty good reproduction of that era.

Song of the Day: Nirvana - Aneurysm

As I posted earlier today, I'm excited as hell about Record Store Day, and Nirvana is one of the reasons. Their Hormoaning EP is going to be issued in the US for the first time, and it includes one of my favorite songs, "Aneurysm." It's a song that wouldn't have been out of place on Nevermind, and it makes me wonder whether, were Cobain still alive, he'd still be able to sing - it sounds like he's tearing the hell out of his vocal cords here.

This track is available on Incesticide, but any excuse to own more Nirvana on vinyl is worthwhile.

Song of the Day: Killing Joke - Eighties

I had never heard of this song until I read this AV Club article that mentioned that a certain popular '90s band had pretty much ripped it off.  And you know what?  It's probably true - the riff sounds very, very similar.

I like this song, and it led me to check out more Killing Joke - specifically, their eponymous debut and a best of compilation. However, I have to say I didn't care for much of what I heard, but I'd be open to a recommendation.

Plus, if anyone can name the song that this inspired in the comments (without clicking the link above or peeking at the tags for this post), I'll be very impressed.

Song of the Day: Meat Puppets - Severed Goddess Hand

As I imagine was the case for most people, the first Meat Puppets songs I heard were when the brothers joined Nirvana on MTV Unplugged.  Around the same time, they had a pretty big hit with "Backwater" off of their Too High to Die album, which I dutifully went out and bought.  Outside of this album, I never completely got into the Meat Puppets, though I've tried (and I'm still trying - I just recently bought the vinyl reissue of II, which contains all three songs from the Unplugged sessions).  But Too High to Die is a solid and quite eclectic album, which this song (including its title) exemplifies perfectly.
